Keep Queensland's Ban on Killing Flying-foxes

Picture
There are compelling reasons to maintain the current ban on killing flying-foxes. Electrocution and shooting are inhumane and environmentally damaging, and have limited effectiveness. Click on the links to learn why the ban should stay.

NGO Statement  (read full statement here)
Animal welfare and conservation organisations strongly oppose any return to shooting or electrocution of flying-foxes. More than 40 NGOs have endorsed a statement calling on political parties to permit only humane methods of crop protection and to focus on protecting flying-foxes against multple threats.

Welfare (details here)
  • Shooting and electrocution have been assessed by experts to be inhumane
  • Electrocuted flying-foxes may take several minutes or longer to die
  • Many shot flying-foxes are injured and die slowly from wounds, hunger or thirst
  • Orphaned young flying-foxes die from thirst or starvation when their mother is killed in an orchard
  • Humaneness requirements under Queensland law are at risk

Conservation (details here)
  • Two  flying-fox species targeted in fruit crops are  nationally threatened.
  • Flying-foxes are vital pollinators and seed dispersers, so warrant strict protection

Crop Protection (details  here)
  • Lethal methods of crop protection have very limited effectiveness
  • Full exclusion netting is the only reliable method of crop protection
